The Foundation for Medical Services is seeking to recruit Engineers to join the Biomedical department of the Foundation for Medical Services.

Jobsplus Permit Number: 1007/2024.

The Engineer within the Biomedical department at MDH will be responsible for the maintenance and service, on all Medical Equipment installed at Mater Dei Hospital, Gozo General Hospital, Mount Carmel Hospital, St Vincent De Paule, Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre and Health Centres, and assist all departments, including the Central Procurement and Supplies Unit (CPSU), on the purchasing of all equipment, spares and materials required by the hospital with the exception of drug supplies. The position of the Engineer within the hospital’s organizational structure may change in line with new exigencies of the service.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Manages and co-ordinates the entire preventative maintenance schemes of all medical and laboratory equipment, installed at Mater Dei Hospital, Gozo General Hospital, Mount Carmel Hospital, St Vincent De Paule, Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre and Health Centres of Malta.

  • Manages all repairs of all medical and laboratory equipment installed at Mater Dei Hospital, Gozo General Hospital, Mount Carmel Hospital, St Vincent De Paule, Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre and Health Centres.

  • Keeps all logs of all maintenance and service programs completed on all relevant medical and laboratory equipment.


Assist in the procurement process of Laboratory Equipment, that shall include

  • The preparation of tender specifications for and laboratory equipment, assist in tender adjudication of and laboratory equipment and other general electronic equipment, receive, test and commission all medical and laboratory equipment purchased for Mater Dei Hospital, Gozo General Hospital, Mount Carmel Hospital, St Vincent De Paule, Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre and Health Centres update a fixed asset register of all medical and laboratory equipment at all hospital and health centre entities.

  • Assist in the procurement process of all spare parts required to maintain all Medical and Laboratory Equipment installed at Mater Dei Hospital, Gozo General Hospital, Mount Carmel Hospital, St Vincent De Paule, Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre and Health Centres accessories required for the same medical and laboratory equipment purchasing of medical and laboratory equipment required for the Medical Equipment Library

  • The Engineer shall be required to certify receipt of all medical equipment, medical equipment accessories and spare parts and shall, in conjunction with the Central Procurement and Supplies Unit (CPSU), certify all files and other official documents for payment of all relevant goods delivered to Mater Dei Hospital, Gozo General Hospital, Mount Carmel Hospital, St Vincent De Paule, Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre and Health Centres

  • The Engineer shall also be responsible for running and managing the Medical Equipment Library, which shall keep a stock of ward medical and laboratory equipment, which shall be issued to all departments, in accordance with the exigencies of these same departments / wards at Mater Dei Hospital, Gozo General Hospital, Mount Carmel Hospital, St Vincent De Paule, Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre and Health Centres, keeping logs of where this equipment shall be distributed to these departments shall also be kept by the Biomedical Engineering department.

  • Liaises with senior officials within the hospital to identify the various medical and laboratory equipment requirements, and to commence the tendering process accordingly.

  • The Engineer shall be required to handle all tenders with transparency and efficiency, and shall, at no cost, allow these documents to be handled by any private contractor.

  • Develop policies and procedures to facilitate the proper handling of all Medical and Laboratory Equipment at Mater Dei Hospital, Gozo General Hospital, Mount Carmel Hospital, St Vincent De Paule, Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre and Health Centres.

  • Review and assist the CPSU on policies and procedures in relation to procurement, stores and stock control, that are directly linked to the Biomedical Engineering department.

  • Plans and organises the activities of the support team and manages the performance and development of staff.

  • The Engineer shall be required to assist the Director of Biomedical Engineering, to ensure that all services required to operate all Medical and Laboratory Equipment will be installed on site, as required.


The Engineer shall be required to assist, as described above, all other existing Directors / Head appointed to the MDH Management and its clinical departments. This shall include, but shall not be limited to the following functions:

  • Annual forecast budgets for capital outlays on medical equipment.

  • Annual forecast budgets for recurrent expenditure on medical equipment.

  • Annual forecast budgets for technical staff training programs on medical equipment.

  • Annual forecast budgets for staff recruitment of the Biomedical department.

  • Integration of medical equipment with the IT equipment installed and supplied by the IT department.

  • The Engineer shall be required to deal effectively and transparently with suppliers for the timely procurement and delivery of goods and services.

  • Contributes commitment and effort, together with other management staff, in obtaining and maintaining international certification on standards.

  • Provides advice on operational matters and areas of procedural weakness to the Director of Biomedical Engineering.

  • Such other duties as may from time to time be required.


Job criteria
By the closing date and time of this call for applications, applicants must have:

  • A recognized and accredited Electrical or Mechanical Engineering Bachelor’s degree at MQF Level 6, with interests to practice in the field of Biomedical Engineering.

  • Maltese Warrant to practice as Engineer.


Other pre-requisites

  • Work experience on medical equipment in hospitals or health entities will be considered an asset.

  • Proficient in the English language, both written and verbal.

Type of contract and salary range

  • Contract type: Indefinite contract with 12 months probationary period.

  • Salary: An attractive salary package, including allowances and a performance bonus is being offered with this position.
