The average monthly basic salary in Malta reached €2,282 during the second quarter of 2026, as employment across the country continued to rise, according to figures from the National Statistics Office (NSO).

Malta’s employed population was estimated at 339,935 people, representing an increase of 3.4% compared with the same quarter in 2025.

Of those in employment, almost 300,000 people worked full-time, while 39,941 people had part-time employment as their main job.

Malta Salaries Vary Significantly By Occupation

While Malta’s average monthly basic salary stood at €2,282, the figures reveal significant differences depending on occupation.

Employees working in elementary occupations earned an average basic salary of €1,412 per month, at the lower end of the scale.

Meanwhile, managers recorded the highest average basic salary at €3,657 per month.

The difference means the average basic salary for managers was more than €2,200 per month higher than that recorded among workers in elementary occupations.

Looking at salaries by economic sector, financial and insurance activities recorded the highest average monthly basic salary, at €3,021.

Malta Employment Rate Reaches 80%

The latest employment figures also show that 80 out of every 100 people aged between 15 and 64 were employed during the second quarter of 2026.

However, a notable gender gap remained.

The employment rate among men stood at 85.1%, compared with 73.9% among women.

This represents a gap of 11.2% between male and female employment rates.

Malta Unemployment Rate Stands At 3.3%

Unemployment remained relatively low during the quarter, with Malta’s unemployment rate standing at 3.3%.

An estimated 11,431 people were unemployed during the second quarter of 2026.

The figures come alongside continued growth in Malta’s employed population, which increased by 3.4% year-on-year.

More Than 40% Of Malta’s Workers Have Tertiary Education

Education levels among Malta’s workforce were also highlighted in the latest figures.

Around 41.1% of employed people aged 15 and over had a tertiary level of education, showing that more than four in every ten people in employment had reached higher education level.

With Malta’s average basic salary now standing at €2,282 per month, the latest figures provide another snapshot of the country’s labour market, highlighting growing employment alongside substantial differences in earnings between occupations and sectors.
